Ancient wisdom meets modern scienceAyurveda + Natural Health News Join our newsletter to receive LYMPHexclusive eBookMenopause and PMS Symptoms: They may not be Hormonalby on January 14, 2021 Silence The Ayurvedic perspective on painful periods, water retention, and more considers the congestion of the lymphatic system a primary culprit. Here, useful suggestions for identifying and treating premenstrual and menopausian problems. In this article:The Role of Hormones in Menstruation and Menopause Over the years, I have worked with countless women suffering from uncomfortable or painful menstrual cycles. Studies have shown that menstrual pain can lead to a decrease in the quality of life, and that more 40% of women of reproductive age are affected by symptoms of post-traumatic stress syndrome. 1.2 Often, the same women who experience problematic periods throughout their years of childbirth also experience more symptoms during menopause. Many of these women have been led to believe that their problems are hormonal. Contraceptive pills are prescribed for painful or heavy periods2-6, and bioidental hormones have become the Holy Grail for women during their menopause years. 7 Curiously, there is often a simple Ayurvedic protocol for balanced menstruation and menopause that does not imply any hormone, or natural or herbal hormonal precursors. In fact, from an Ayurvedic point of view, in many cases, the problem may not be hormonal at all. Continue reading to discover a natural therapy that can address the root of uncomfortable menstrual problems. The Role of the Lymph: Removing Waste The lymph system is the largest circulatory system in the body and is critical for optimal health. Lymph channels drain waste from all parts of the body.8 When these drains are congested, it is as if a traffic jam occurs in your body, and you can take a toll. The female reproductive system is drained by a complex set of lymphatics12 which, according to Ayurveda, are extremely active as a premenstrual detoxification, building the impulse of ovulation at the beginning of the menstrual flow. According to , when women menstruate, reproductive waste is eliminated through the lymph before the actual menstruation. If the lymphatic system is managed from years of poor digestion, a sedentary lifestyle, and a group of other lymphatic congestive catalysts, the lymph may be supported in reproductive organs and the menstrual cycle may become painful, irregular, excessively heavy or even absent. The increase in progesterone levels also contributes to water retention and a possible aggravation of the lymphatic system and the symptoms of SPM. Congested lymph brings with it symptoms typically associated with menstrual cycle, including breast swelling or tenderness, swelling, water retention and decomposition, especially around the mouth and chin. Although they are considered a normal part of the menstrual experience in the West, according to Ayurveda, these are signs that their lymph system is overly congested pre-menstrually, when they are called to the lymph to support their cycle. With a basic understanding of the lymph drainage system, we can see why. We recommend preliminary symptoms of Lymph congestion Here is how the lymph system congestion can manifest:1. Breasts swollen and tend Breasts are a concentration of lymph tissue and lymph fluid. If the lymph of the body is congested at the time of menstruation, the lymph tissue and the fluid can be swollen, causing swelling of the breast or tenderness.2. Skill problems When the lymph is congested, the skin can be used as a back-up exit ramp for impurities. Right under the skin is the lymphatic tissue associated with the skin, or SALT. This tissue works as a defense against any toxic substance, bacteria, virus or parasite that tries to penetrate the skin.9 If the lymph is congested during menstruation, the SALT can also obstruct. Instead of draining the skin, it may result in outbreaks and other types of skin irritation.3. Diarrhea, constipation and other intestinal problemsAs the skin outside our bodies, the epithelium — the skin that borders the intestinal tract — is drained by a massive concentration of lymph called lymph tissue associated with the intestine, or GALT. This is the highest concentration of lymph in the body. 10During menstruation, obstructed GALT, commonly caused by digestive problems, can create swelling, belly fat, hypersensitivity, elevated reaction of histamine to environmental irritants, discomfort of temporary joint, fatigue, mild headaches, skin problems and reproductive imbalances.4 Respiratory Issues The respiratory tract is also lined with a type of skin that is drained by lymphoid tissue associated with mucosa, or MALT. If the lymph is not properly moved during menstruation, this may result in an imbalance of the mucous membranes of the respiratory system, which compromises the efficiency of the entire upper respiratory system. 11Further Signs of Lymph Congestion We recommend How to improve the lymph flow function The quality, duration, level of comfort and time of the menses offer a monthly opportunity to evaluate your lymphatic function. If any of the symptoms mentioned above are experienced during menstruation (or exacerbated by) it may be a sign of a lymph flow problem. When I evaluate reproductive or menstrual problems, I look for other symptoms that are classically related to lymph to help determine whether the condition is actually a hormonal problem or one based on poor lymph circulation. Here is a list of simple things that you can do at home every day to improve the lymph flow and function: Eat more fruits and vegetables and decrease the amount of meat, breads, grains, dairy, processed food and junk food. Try to shoot for a two-thirds alkaline diet and one-third acid foods. is the herb that is most effective to help de-stagnate lymphatic. I've used this herb successfully for years in support of rreproductive problems related to lymph. Manjistha is one of Ayurveda's most effective antioxidants, which are active in the body's lymphatic system. 13 The red root, an active ingredient in the LifeSpa tincture, is perhaps one of the best available lymphoid decongestive herbs. It works best to compensate for the accumulation of age-related fibrous tissue. 14Wood water rabbit every 10-15 minutes all day for two weeks. Drink 1/2 your body weight ideal in ambient temperature water ounces a day. In , skin brushed is called Garshana. they are used to exfoliate the skin. With vigorous brushing, silk gloves also create static electricity, which is known to alkalate the blood and help move the lymph. Daily massages in Ayurveda is called . A mixture of herbs cooked in sesame oil is traditionally used to massage the body daily to improve lymph flow. TIA Lynda B says This condition (irregular or heavy periods) seems to be more frequent in women who have hyper-lax tissues (joint hypermobility). Women with joint hypermovility tend to be more athletic, and also tend to be prone to cellulite when they are no longer as active as in their younger years... Has anyone seen a connection between menstruation problems, tissue laxity, cellulite and slow lymph drainage in female athletes in their later years? Samrin says I have severely irregular periods. And before the left period the axillary lymph node is enlarged. Is there a connection? Ab says 1. I read somewhere that menstruation in the phase of waxing the moon indicates fertility in women. What do you think of that? Is there any science or wisdom behind it? 2. Is it common to get boilers in the groin area just before menstruation? I've been getting this for so many years. I guess this could be a problem with lymphatic drainage? He says, "So he eloquently said, "Thank you for these gems of knowledge." Mary Schneckenburger says endometriosis seems to be more common or more diagnosed. I hope I did, but they didn't diagnose me. My daughter just operated to excite the cells on the road. I'm curious how or if Ayurveda would connect endometriosis to lymph or some other problem. It is said to be genetic and both my daughter and I have had good nutrition and active life. Alicia says Did you get an answer to this question? I'd be interested in what he said. Marie Melanie Graff says Hi, I sent you an answer with a return to your email. I think it's very important that we more easily look for the function and dysfunction of the lymph system in all areas of health and well-being. Many factors in our environment and modern lifestyles compromise the lymph system and there is very little attention to this in the medical current. My email answer details several points, but in particular the article does not sufficiently address that the lymph system is the hormone delivery system.
